Ensemble Erik’s creation is rooted in the innovative spirit of its namesake, the French composer Erik Satie. Satie was known for his unconventional approach to composition, which focused on clarity, simplicity, and experimentation—a philosophy the ensemble aims to carry forward in its mission to bridge classical music with crossover genres and attract diverse audiences.
The program for the debut concerts features two major works by Philip Glass: The Windcatcher, written for six saxophones, and Glassworks, his widely acclaimed 1981 album. Ensemble Erik will use the original instrumentation for these pieces, incorporating strings, French horns, keyboard/piano, and six reed players, providing audiences with an authentic performance in line with Glass’s intentions.
The group is led by conductor John Beswick, a veteran in the field with over 30 years of experience. He has brought together musicians from across the United Kingdom, all selected for their high level of skill and commitment to ensemble performance.
The choice of venues reflects the ensemble’s desire to combine distinguished architecture with modern sound design, enhancing the listening experience. Hackney Church and The Stoller Hall are both known for their unique atmospheres and acoustic qualities, making them suitable locations for the ensemble’s launch.
Ensemble Erik has stated its objective as presenting high-quality performances that balance respect for tradition with innovative approaches to programming and presentation.
